The rear wall and courtyard garden of the synagogue. This area of the synagogue complex holds the Memorial Garden and cemetery.
According to Jewish tradition, cemeteries are typically not permitted on the immediate premises of a house of prayer. However, this courtyard became a necessity during the winter of 1944–1945, when over 2,200 Jews perished from starvation and the cold in the ghetto and were laid to rest here in makeshift mass graves.
The courtyard opens directly into the Wallenberg Memorial Park with the Tree of Life sculpture dedicated to the hundreds of thousands of Hungarian Jewish victims of the Holocaust.
Tree of Life (a metal weeping willow), located behind the synagogue. The metallic leaves are engraved with names of Hungarian Holocaust victims.
