All streets lead to Praça do Giraldo (Giraldo Square). Giraldo Square is a tribute to Fearless Geraldo Geraldes, the man who conquered Évora from the Moors in 1167. To thank him, King Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, nominated him Governor of Évora (alcaide of Évora) and High Protector of the Borders of Alentejo.
 

Igreja de Santo Antão (Church of Saint Anthony) is a Baroque masterpiece of gilded wood, vivid paintings on a wooden vaulted ceiling and blue and white azulejos tiles. It is considered one of the finest church interiors in Portugal.
 

Igreja de São Francisco (Church of St. Francis) was built between 1475 and the 1550s, replacing an earlier Romanesque church of 1226. It is best known for its Chapel of the Bones.
