Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, Marquis of Pombal (a Portuguese statesman and diplomat who effectively ruled the Portuguese Empire from 1750 to 1777 as chief minister to King Joseph I), Alvares Pereira (a Portuguese general of great success who had a decisive role in the 1383-1385 Crisis that assured Portugal's independence from Castile) and the Tagus River
 

 

 

 

 

Comercio Square opens onto Rua Augusta through the arch. This is a pedestrian street with mosaic pavements, outdoor cafés, international shops, and the occasional street artist and peddler.
