Largo do Carmo (Carmo Plaza) is named after the Igreja do Carmo (Church of Carmo) and convent which was once on the plaza.
The Quartel do Carmo (Carmo headquarters), also the headquarters of the Guarda Nacional Republicana (Republican National Guard), is a very important building for Portugal's history. Marcelo Caetano (former dictator António de Oliveira Salazar's replacer) found refuge in the main Lisbon military police station at the time of the 1974 revolution. |
