Vila Nova de Gaia waterfront
The Half Rabbit sculpture by Portuguese artist Bordallo II is his critique of wastefulness. Metal pieces, street signs, and plastic containers are just some of the materials used to create the rabbit’s eyes, ears, and whiskers. It is positioned on the building in such a way that the rabbit is seemingly folded in two, with one half being multicolored and the other unpainted. It is for these reasons that the artwork is called the Half Rabbit.
The waterfront
The Dom Luís I bridge, built in 1879, was designed by Gustave Eiffel. It is a double-deck metal arch bridge that spans the Douro River between the Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. At its construction, its span of 564 feet was the longest of its type in the world.
These boats are called rabelos. The rabelo is a traditional Portuguese wooden cargo boat that was used for centuries to transport people and goods (especially Port wine) along the Douro River. Now used for tourist rides.
