Saint-Émilion, previously called Ascumbas, is located 22 miles northeast of Bordeaux. It was renamed from Ascumbas after the monk Émilion, a travelling confessor, who settled in a hermitage carved into the rock there in the 8th century. Vineyards were planted in the area as early as the 2nd century.
The Monolithic Church is an underground church and the largest in Europe to have been built from a single stone. The church was constructed in the late 11th century. The bell tower was built between the 12th and the 15th century.
