A cog train is a type of steep-grade railway that uses a cogwheel (a toothed gear) on the locomotive to mesh with a toothed rack rail located between the running rails. This mechanism provides extra traction and controlled braking, allowing the train to climb steep gradients that would be impossible for a conventional friction-based train.
